A good friend who's also a professional sports scribe visited Camp Bravo this month and passes along a few observations:
1. The Braves screwed up by trading Tony Pena. Why spend money to bring in a veteran, Chris Woodward, when they have a young guy who's out of options, backed up by a wealth of middle infield prospects that only grew with hot-shot Lillibridge. Pena is smooth, he has a Furcal-like cannon arm and might hit better than some think (he sure has this spring). Woodward, meanwhile, seems to have great difficulty staying healthy. He has a good glove but otherwise his only strength is his experience.
2. I liked Soriano and Gonzalez a lot so I think the bullpen should be good. Boyer was throwing well and will open in Richmond, so that tells us something.
3. Thorman reminds me of a young Klesko -- whoosh, whoosh goes the big left-handed swing. I foresee considerable playing time for Craig Wilson at first base.
4. Andruw looks slimmer, Chipper was a grumpy mutha who was hitting a ton and Redman is going to have at least a 4.50 ERA.
I'm here for ya, Dawgman. Four days and counting to G-Day. Here's my prediction: M. Staffort and M. Rickt will continually piss excellence for the next twelve months.
I think UGA VI has got another year in him, least thats what Sonny says.
